Communities That Catalyze Movements

Five years ago I was invited to speak at our first Catalyst Community in Albania by my good friend, NewThing Catalyst Community Founding Director, Joe Wilson. Here I met two amazing servants of Jesus: Altin Kita & Kejdis Bakalli. With their leadership, their spouses, church teams, and friends, God was working through them to do an incredible Kingdom work. Also on this trip was Paul Mumaw, Lead Pastor of Genesis Church, who apprenticed as a Teacher of our Catalyst Community content. This is when he fell in love with Albania and the great need to see movements of churches started across the Balkan Nations.

Since that first meeting in Albania, God has done immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine! In a country with less than 1% of the population as Evangelical Christians, we now have 8 NewThing Networks that have planted 70 NEW churches in 5 years!

1. By the grace of God

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them–yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:10).

We are incredibly humbled by how God is working through NewThing all over the world. To date, we are working in 44 countries, praying God would lead us into all 196 countries on the planet!

2. By identifying a Person of Peace

God has prepared in advance the right person to work alongside to accomplish the Jesus Mission in his or her country (Luke 10:6). This person will have white-hot faith, think Kingdom not castles, have a history of starting new things, and believe God will do more than they could ask or imagine.

3. By organizing churches into reproducing networks

From day one of our Catalyst Communities we work with the local leader to explore what organized networks might look like. We believe organized, accountable, reproducing networks are what makes a movement. In these accountable networks, they focus on reproducing goals, encouraging, and praying for one another.

4. By apprenticing everything

At NewThing, we believe every role is reproducible (2 Timothy 2:2). With this belief in mind, we apprentice the Catalyst Leader, the Teacher, and the Facilitator.

  • Catalyst Leader: A leader who builds a Global Catalyst Community from the “person of peace” to a NewThing Network launched.

  • Teacher: A pastor of a NewThing church who can teach, train, and inspire churches to hear the BIG DREAM God has for them and their church.

  • Facilitator: An individual who leads church teams to apply what has been taught through interactive team exercises.

We believe these are the 3 key roles to making Catalyst Communities happen in every country. Interesting in apprenticing? Contact Eric Metcalf, NewThing Global Associate Director.

5. By being friends on mission

Catalyst Community Leades

This picture represents a dream we have for NewThing: that we would be friends on mission who relentlessly pursue the Jesus Mission together. You see Albanians, North Americans, and a Macedonian: Sascha Vuletic.

Sascha brought a Macedonian team to our Catalyst Community event in Albania. He left inspired and asked if we could launch a Catalyst Community in Macedonia. Through prayer, discernment, and relationship, we did and we are already seeing God-sized results in his country! In fact, the city in the background is the capital of Macedonia, Skopje!

Friends on mission, accomplishing the Jesus Mission together. Life doesn’t get much better than this!
