Element #1 Definition of a Disciple

Big Idea
Each church needs to agree on a definition for a disciple.

Action Learning Plan Part 1:

What is your current definition of a disciple? If you don’t have one yet, go ahead and journal some ideas about it or make a bulleted list of key aspects.

Action Learning Plan Part 2:

Which of these three elements do you need more input from? How will you seek more input in each of these areas? • Examples: Are there ministries or churches you need to do some research on? • Survey: What passages of Scripture do you need to survey? Make a list. • Linguistic: Are there particular word studies you want to prioritize? Make a list. • Teammates: Who else do you need to include in this? Key stakeholders? How can you include them? Please remember we are here to provide coaching or input, so call us over as needed. Debrief: What stood out to you? What needs to change?

Action Learning Plan Part 3:

Look at your definition. Consider these three elements: Relational, Transformational and Missional. • To what degree is each clearly included? • Which of the three values is clearest? • Which of the three values is vague? • Make changes to clarify these values in your definition of a disciple.

Action Learning Plan Part 4:

Consider the following questions, • How robust is your definition? If someone lived into this definition, to what degree would they look like disciples we see in the New Testament? • How simple is your definition? • How reproducible is it? How easily could they share it with others? • How compelling is it? Jot down your impressions. Are there changes you would like to make? Do so now.

Action Learning Plan Final:

When it comes to having a definition of disciple that can serve your church, network or movement, based on the five critical questions, the three values, and the three sources for a good definition, what is the Spirit saying to you? What needs to happen in the next 90 days? Make a bullet list of steps that are specific, measurable, action-based, relevant and time-bound.

Big Idea
To build a healthy network, we must discern the spirit of unity within our city, understand the strength of our relational network, and consider the diversity for which we must aim.

Values: Values state what is important to you as an individual and to your organization.

Narrative: The narrative is how you talk about what the church is doing and what it hopes to do in the future.

Narrative inspires culture
A narrative is a collection of the stories you tell and the things you celebrate.

Behaviors: This is the action of your Values and Narratives coming together in what you produce.

Action Learning Plan Part 1:

What is the “State of the Unity” in your your city? Why did you choose that answer?

Action Learning Plan Part 2:

• Write down the names of leaders in your current relational network that you know are already willing to work with you toward church planting if they were to be invited. • Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind names or churches now that might be willing to dream about church planting with you.

Action Learning Plan Part 3:

• On a scale of 1 - 10, how diverse is your city? Write your answer below. • On a scale of 1 - 10, how diverse is your relational network of leaders with whom you might collaborate? • Is the Spirit inviting you to consider an action step out what you’re seeing?

Big Idea
To build a healthy network, we must discern the spirit of unity within our city, understand the strength of our relational network, and consider the diversity for which we must aim.

Action Learning Plan Part 1:

Does your church have a clear and simple definition of what a “church” is? If “yes”, what is it? If “no”, then take the time to define a “church” as a team now. Come up with a “sloppy” first draft.

Action Learning Plan Part 2:

If you have a definition for a “church”, now ask these questions: Is it simple? Is it reproducible? Is it contextual? Is it sustainable?

Action Learning Plan Part 3:

What is your most important take away, that the Holy Spirit is highlighting, from this conversation on defining Church and Church Planting? Turn that into an “I will…” or “We will…” statement.

Action Learning Plan Part 4:

NEXT ASK: WHAT IS THE END GAME OF OUR MULTIPLICATION? Draw a rough map of your city/context. Shade the area of your context for which you sense you are called to own the lostness. This is not your current activation, but your aspirational goal.

Action Learning Plan Part 5:

Now, draw in your current activation level on that map. In other words, where do you have an active and ongoing gospel presence, gospel demonstration, and gospel proclamation?

Action Learning Plan Part 6:

What is the Spirit saying to you about your next steps toward Gospel Saturation? What other Kingdom-minded church leaders do you need to connect with?

Action Learning Plan Part 7:

FINALLY ASK: WHERE DO I BEGIN? FOUR ACTION STEPS Begin in prayer. Return to Jesus. “Lord, what do I need to see? What do I need to hear? What do you want to say to me?” Reflection: Lord, what do you want to say to me about prayer and my multiplication journey?

Action Learning Plan Part 8:

Personally commit to being a disciple who makes disciples, who make disciples. Reflection: Lord, what do you want to say to me about disciple-making and my multiplication journey? Who are my 3-12? Are they reliable? Are they running AFTR?

Commit to developing AN INTENTIONAL PLAN TO MULTIPLY at each of the following levels: * Disciples * Leaders * Churches * Networks Do we have a plan (language, tools, relationships, and environments) to intentionally multiply at each point of multiplication? What is that plan? How might the Movement System help? Other resources the Holy Spirit is bringing to mind?
